One thing leads to another : Stop eating too much saturated fatty acid or you will…

Burgers, pizzas, fish & chips… How many of us eat this kind of food at least 3 times a week?

Having too much food containing saturated fatty acids increase risk of diabetes, but it doesn’t just stop there. Research shows that patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are more susceptible to developing Alzheimer’s Disease, at least twice as much when compared to normal subject.

Published in Neuroscience, L. Jiang and colleagues found that large amount of Very Long-Chain Fatty Acid (VLCFA) accumulated in the cortex and hippocampus of diabetic rats after being fed with high fat diet. VLCFA, especially C26.0, induced oxidative stress and decreased the oxidation capability of peroxisome in these neurons. In addition, they also observed the formation of beta-Amyloid peptide (Aβ) plaques in these animals as they fail Water-Maze and other learning tests.

We are proud to announce that arigo’s beta-Amyloid (1-42) ELISA Kit (ARG80939) was used in this study for the quantification of Aβ plaque formation in diabetes-induced rats.
