GeneID: 4254 Human KITLG

Swiss-port # P21583 Human Kit ligand

Gene Symbol KITLG
Gene Full Name KIT ligand
Background Stem Cell Factor (SCF), also called c-kit Ligand or Mast Cell Growth Factor (MGF), is a peptide growth factor/cytokine with broad activities, especially related to hematopoiesis (ref 1-3). SCF acts on early hematopoietic progenitor/stem cells and stimulates the proliferation and survival of mast cells. Also, SCF is one of the most potent stimulators of multi-lineage progenitors (CFU-GEMM) in both human and murine bone marrow cells (ref 2,4). SCF acts synergistically with other growth factors, including erythropoietin, G-CSF, M-CSF, GM-CSF, IL-3 and IL-6, to increase the number and size of colonies of hematopoietic progenitors (ref 1,2,5). SCF appears to play an important role in the survival, proliferation or migration of primordial germ cells and melanoblasts during both development and maturation (ref 6,7).

PTM A soluble form (sKITLG) is produced by proteolytic processing of isoform 1 in the extracellular domain.
Found in two differentially glycosylated forms, LMW-SCF and HMW-SCF. LMW-SCF is fully N-glycosylated at Asn-145, partially N-glycosylated at Asn-90, O-glycosylated at Ser-167, Thr-168 and Thr-180, and not glycosylated at Asn-97 or Asn-118. HMW-SCF is N-glycosylated at Asn-118, Asn-90 and Asn-145, O-glycosylated at Ser-167, Thr-168 and Thr-180, and not glycosylated at Asn-97.
A soluble form exists as a cleavage product of the extracellular domain.
