Gene Symbol | GH1 |
Gene Full Name | growth hormone 1 |
Background | Human growth hormone (hGH) is a 191 amino acid polypeptide secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. The hormone is critical for height increase and stature development before puberty, and is needed for maintaining healthy organ and vitality in adults. In childhood, insufficient hGH results in short stature and over secretion of hGH causes gigantism. hGH is regulated primarily by somatocrinin and somatostatin released from hypothyalamus in response to physiological signals such as age, gender nutrition, excise, stress and sleep etc. |
Function | Plays an important role in growth control. Its major role in stimulating body growth is to stimulate the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1. It stimulates both the differentiation and proliferation of myoblasts. It also stimulates amino acid uptake and protein synthesis in muscle and other tissues. [UniProt] |
