Background | The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are a family of peptidase enzymes responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix components, including collagen, gelatin, fibronectin, laminin and proteoglycan. Transcription of MMP genes is differentially activated by phorbol ester, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB). MMP catalysis requires both calcium and zinc. MMP-13 (also designated collagenase-3) is produced by breast carcinomas and degrades collagen type I, II, III. |
Research Area | Cancer antibody; Cell Biology and Cellular Response antibody; Signaling Transduction antibody |
Calculated MW | 54 kDa |
PTM | The proenzyme is activated by removal of the propeptide; this cleavage can be effected by other matrix metalloproteinases, such as MMP2, MMP3 and MMP14 and may involve several cleavage steps. Cleavage can also be autocatalytic, after partial maturation by another protease or after treatment with 4-aminophenylmercuric acetate (APMA) (in vitro). N-glycosylated. Tyrosine phosphorylated by PKDCC/VLK. |
