GeneID: 412 Human STS

Swiss-port # P08842 Human Steryl-sulfatase

Gene Symbol STS
Gene Full Name steroid sulfatase (microsomal), isozyme S
Background This gene encodes a multi-pass membrane protein that is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum. It belongs to the sulfatase family and hydrolyzes several 3-beta-hydroxysteroid sulfates, which serve as metabolic precursors for estrogens, androgens, and cholesterol. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked ichthyosis (XLI). Alternatively spliced transcript variants resulting from the use of different promoters have been described for this gene (PMID:17601726). [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2016]
Function Catalyzes the conversion of sulfated steroid precursors, such as dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and estrone sulfate to the free steroid. [UniProt]
Cellular Localization Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. [UniProt]
Calculated MW 65 kDa
PTM The conversion to 3-oxoalanine (also known as C-formylglycine, FGly), of a serine or cysteine residue in prokaryotes and of a cysteine residue in eukaryotes, is critical for catalytic activity. [UniProt]
