Gene Symbol GK
Gene Full Name glycerol kinase
Background The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the FGGY kinase family. This protein is a key enzyme in the regulation of glycerol uptake and metabolism. It catalyzes the phosphorylation of glycerol by ATP, yielding ADP and glycerol-3-phosphate. Mutations in this gene are associated with glycerol kinase deficiency (GKD). Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2011]
Function Key enzyme in the regulation of glycerol uptake and metabolism. [UniProt]
Cellular Localization Mitochondrion outer membrane; In sperm and fetal tissues, the majority of the enzyme is bound to mitochondria, but in adult tissues, such as liver found in the cytoplasm. [UniProt]
Calculated MW 61 kDa

Immunohistochemistry: Paraffin-embedded Mouse kidney tissue. Antigen Retrieval: Heat mediated was performed in Citrate buffer (pH 6.0, epitope retrieval solution) for 20 min. The tissue section was blocked with 10% goat serum. The tissue section was then stained with ARG58794 anti-Glycerol kinase antibody at 1 µg/ml, overnight at 4°C.
